Weekend Youth Rugby Results 30th November 2014

Reports from the Weekend Youth Rugby Action

02 December 2014

Boroughmuir Rugby S1: 27 - 10: Ayr RFC S1

Before we start a very big thank you to all the players who turned up today, to be taken over to Ayr, to play in a match that required them to play at maximum effort for the duration of the game, stand up to the opposition and keep the Boroughmuir S1 magic alive - massive gratitude from the coaches and spectators! Secondly, another big thank you to all the parents who helped out by taking players over in their cars - very much appreciated, without you there is no game!
So a TWELVE MAN team travelled over to a sunny Millbrae, to take on the S1 Ayr side. Our last encounter with Ayr was at the Marr tournament and saw us loose to a big Ayr side. Today saw the same 'big guys' turn out for Ayr against a spirited Muir side - we've learnt how to handle big teams and this showed - very few missed tackles today.
Ayr kicked off to a waiting Muir and the game began. It was quickly apparent that Ayr had a good structure to their play, which was to to get the ball back through their forwards and send it wide each time. Muir caught on to this and used a quick flat defence to pressurise the Ayr back line who quickly ran out of players to pass to, Muir had more numbers at the wide breakdown and managed to win the ball back. In comparison, our forwards were more effective in picking and running at the Ayr pack who were having trouble working how to stop some determined running and quick offloading. From the offload the ball went down the line quickly, which took it to the wings every time. Where the difference came was, when the ball got to the wing we had enough support to bring it back into play and move it forward again. This allowed us to stack the try count in our favour, 7tries to 3. After three long periods, the whistle blew and Muir had recorded a very good win on the back of a very determined performance.
Each player lifted their game for this and it showed! Maximum effort and good performances all round. Still some work to do with our body position at the ruck and the understanding of the forwards to run a effective 'black ball'. But that said - today was the players day - well done!!
