Boroughmuir S1Rugby: Currie Game Report

Boroughmuir Rugby 16 - Currie RFC 8

Firstly a big thanks to Currie RFC for accommodating us up at Malleny Park at such short notice! It would have been a real shame if this game hadn't been played.
On what turned out to be a sunny afternoon, the Muir S1's turned up at the Malleny pitches for the game against our 'up-the-road neighbours', Currie. This was never going to be an easy match, as our games with Currie are usually tense and close affairs, and this turned out to be no different.
Muir kicked off to a waiting Currie team and the action began. Currie showed there that they could maintain their structure with some good passing out to their wings. Currie certainly started the stronger of the two teams, but a good ruck followed be some good passing to the Muir left wing saw us go over for the first try and conversion. Currie had their own ideas about it and responded almost immediately with a good passing move to their wing taking them in for their first try. Through the reminder of the period and the next, the teams engaged each other and the play went back and forward. Muir were the only ones to score and convert in the second period.
For the third period, which is the development period, we put on three of our up and coming players, who all did very well, to fit into a close game. A penalty to Currie on our line saw their fast winger, run with good conviction to go in for their second try. Muir gathered themselves again and took the ball back up the park. Some great rucking and counter rucking saw Muir retain the ball through a few phases to allow us to go in for our fourth try, converted once again. Closely afterwards the full time whistle went and Muir took the win.
It's fair to say we didn't have it all our own way today, Currie are too good for that. We never really got our own game going and lived on the counter offence, which we did well. Our rucking was very positive, and on a number of times we were able to counter ruck the Currie forwards and attack from there. The players showed a real resolve and stuck to the task at hand. We play as a team and that is what makes us competitive. When things get tough, we should have the confidence to remain with our quick passing game rather than reverting to individual runs - something we need to keep working on! Again a lot of good individual performances from the players with some players putting in great performances. Well done again to the players for giving maximum effort today, and thank you, as always to all our travelling support.
