Boroughmuir fails against high-flying Dundee High

Match report by Morgane Jarles

Boroughmuir went down 31-20 to Dundee HSFP at windy Mayfield this Saturday. Dundee High School, who was pretty motivated after winning their last 3 games, scored 5 tries and clearly dominated the 1st half and most of the second.

Still, Boroughmuir got away with a bonus point thanks to 4 tries by Cal Davies, Ed Farquahrson, Ian Moody and Johnny Adams.

Robert Cairns started at full back since Craig Marshall was not playing. Ed Farquharson started on the left wing instead of Jordan Edmunds injured, and Andy Rose, just back from Namibia, was on the bench. Stand-off Ben Cooper was on the bench for his first appearance under the Muir jersey.

Boroughmuir benefitted from early possession and showed good intentions in attack, with an excellent pick up by Ian Moody followed by a line break by Stevie Wilson. There were good ball transmissions on the left with David Reekie, Cal Davies, Nick Fraser and then Ed Farquharson taking the ball up.

This was followed by strong pick and go by the forwards, through which Muir gained a penalty and chose the scrum. Dundee dominated that scrum and soon stole the ball. The hosts displayed good go-forward play with a break by Danny Levison followed by a good move in the backline. Indeed, the back 3 made considerable ground on the right that allowed their side to earn a penalty, kicked into touch. The Dundee forwards continued the good offensive work with a maul and Chris Cumming scored an unconverted try (5-0). Muir recovered the ball and Mark Hare ran a fine line break. Alex Cox then took the ball in and Muir gained a penalty, kicked into touch.

An excellent maul resulted into an unconverted try by Cal Davies (5-5). Dundee held on to possession for most of the rest of the 1st half. Richie McIver and Alan Brown both broke through, thereby giving their team good opportunities to score. The Dundonians worked hard to stay close to the try line, and Callum Bowie scored a try after a good move by his scrum-half Andy Dymock. Bryce Hosie added the extra points (12-5).

The latter scored a very entertaining try 5 minutes later, after chasing his own kick against the wind and racing up 60 meters. He converted his own try (19-5). Boroughmuir attempted to come back, with line breaks by Stevie Wilson and Alex Cox, but Dundee held on until half-time (HT 19-5).

Dundee kept dictating the pace of the game after the restart, with good pick and go by the forwards on the left. Nick Alston then found a gap in the Muir defence and scored an unconverted try, which increased the difference on the score board (24-5).

Boroughmuir replied with a try by Ed Farquharson. The wind made it impossible for David Reekie to convert it (24-10). Dundee benefitted from a turnover in a ruck and Bryce Hosie sprinted through on the right. Nick Alston once again found the right interval in the defensive line and touched down. Hosie added the extras (31-10). Muir reacted well with good advancing phases on the right notably with Andy Rose, Alex Cox and Johnny Adams making ground.

Ian Moody scored an unconverted try after an excellent pick up at a scrum (31-15). The Edinburgh side held on to the ball but the tight home defence shut sown Muir’s attempts in attack. However, breaks by Stevie Wilson and Greig Scott allowed Boroughmuir to take the ball up.

Eventually, Alex Cox raced away and offloaded to Johnny Adams for an unconverted try which gave a bonus point to Muir (31-20). Dundee then held on to possession until the final whistle (full time 31-20).

Boroughmuir still stands alone at the top of the league, 8 points ahead of Watsonians who are second after their victory in Biggar.

However, it will be crucial to improve in the next few weeks.
