Boroughmuir HS 1st XV retain Callum Veitch 10s Cup – Murrayfield 25th October 2013

This competition is played in memory of Callum Veitch who sadly lost his life in 2011.

Callum played a huge part in the rugby community, playing for Portobello High School and Musselburgh RFC. Callum was also part of the Edinburgh Pathways and Edinburgh invitational 7’s squad who played in the Urban World Cup in Marseilles 2009.

Boroughmuir 1st XV successfully defended the Veitch Trophy 10s Cup at Murrayfield on 25th October. Well led by Guy Wardrop, the team benefited from a mature display of decision making by David Mitchell at scrum half and this coupled with the pace of Wardrop, MacSporran, Sinclair and Gilligan, the brawn of Frazer, Rees, Clarke-Venters and Greenshields provided the platform for a series of impressive performances in which every squad member played a part.

Drawn in a very competitive group, Boroughmuir played expansive rugby to defeat Dunbar (36-10), Royal High (17-5) and Linlithgow (21-0). A total of 11 tries were scored in 3 games, with Lewis MacSporran scoring 5.

Boroughmuir continued to play attractive rugby defeating Musselburgh 17-0, in the semi-final. In the final Boroughmuir met the runners up from their original group – Dunbar, who had defeated Portobello in the other semi. This proved to be a very different Dunbar team from the first game.

As expected Dunbar changed their tactics and Boroughmuir had to come from behind twice with fine tries from Jamie Greenshields and side stepping special from Michael Sinclair to level the scores at 14-14. Boroughmuir were well on top when the final whistle blew to signal “Sudden Death” extra time.

Dunbar had the advantage of receiving the kick off but a huge tackle by Ben Frazer set up a scrum from which Boroughmuir mounted a siege of the Dunbar line. Five or six attempts to crash the line from close range were thwarted but eventually the ball was spun out wide and Michael Sinclair cut back against the inside shoulder crashed through to score.

The trophy was presented on the Murrayfield pitch at half time in the Edinburgh v Treviso game to captain Guy Wardrop by Callum Veitch’s parents.

This was an impressively mature performance from the Boroughmuir squad consisting mainly of S5 players, 10 members of this squad will be available to defend the title next year.
