Bonus point victory in Braidholm

Match report by Morgane Jarles

Boroughmuir came back from Glasgow with the bonus point this Saturday as they defeated GHA 28-15. The tries came from Ross Bradford, Trent Sutton and a double by Robert Cairns. GHA, who was quite motivated after their hard-fought game against the Watsonians last week, scored 2 tries by Couper and O’Hare.

There were a few changes in the Meggetland side, with Greig Scott and Craig Marshall missing; Robert Cairns moved to full back and Ross Bradford was back on the right wing.

Muir benefited from early possession, and the backs took the ball up thanks to a well-worked overlap with Jordan Edmunds coming in. This resulted into an unconverted try by Ross Bradford only 2 minutes into the game (5-0).

The Meggetland men held on to the ball and cut through the defence several times with breaks by Cal Davies, Stevie Wilson and Alex Cox. These good efforts in attacks were rewarded by a penalty, successfully kicked by David Reekie (8-0). Then, GHA briefly had possession of the ball and created dangerous opportunities thanks to a few clever kicks, but Muir soon regained possession.

There were strong passages of play, with good takes in lineouts by Neil Rodger and good hits by Andy Rose, but it was sometimes a bit difficult because of the wet conditions, and the home defence was very tight. Boroughmuir eventually gained a penalty after an excellent break by Andy Rose, allowing Reekie to add 3 more points to the scoreboard (11-0).

The Glaswegians replied with good go-forward play by the forwards and a fine line break by James Couper on the left wing. However, Muir put a lot of pressure in defence, and Jordan Edmunds received the ball back from a GHA clearance kick. He passed to Robert Cairns who raced away.

Then the forwards were in with an impressive maul, and Trent Sutton concluded the action with an unconverted try (16-0). GHA reacted with an unconverted try near the end of the first half, scored by James Couper after breaks by Scott Carson and Murray Houston (16-5). Muir replied with another strong maul that went more than 10 meters forward and a clever pick up by Sam Johnson, but unfortunately the ball was knocked on just before half-time (HT 16-5).

The Braidholm side was more offensive after the restart, and held on to the ball as much as they could under the pressure of the Meggetland men. They displayed skillful execution with good breaks by Scott Carson and Hefin O’Hare, and gained a penalty, kicked between the posts by Murray Houston (16-8).

Muir then benefited from a knock on, and there were great moves at the back, but Muir failed to capitalize on the numbers advantage after James Couper was sent off for a fault in a ruck. The hosts regained possession and Hefin O’Hare scored a try after an excellent kick pass from Andy Henderson.

Scott Lang added the extra points for GHA to come back only one point behind the visitors (16-15). Muir soon replied with a try by Robert Cairns after a break by Jamie Scott, and Reekie added the extras (23-25). The game became very contested, with GHA keen to come back on the scoreboard, and Boroughmuir keen to score again.

The Meggetland men succeeded thanks to another try by Robert Cairns, unconverted this time (28-15). There were good attempts in attack from GHA at the end of the game, but the Muir defence held on until the final whistle (full time 28-15).

Boroughmuir Captain Andy Rose commented:

“The game was quite physical; they had strong runners and a tight defence. It is good to come away with the win; there was a bit of frustration at times, but we got away with it which shows the maturity of the team”.
