Boroughmuir Rugby Introduces Girls Rugby

by Chris Pacey

Boroughmuir Rugby and Community Sports Club (BR&CSC) achieved another big milestone on Saturday with the club’s first girls rugby game being played at Meggetland. The Boroughmuir Under 15's Girls team hosted their first game against a more experienced girls team from Biggar RFC. Coached by Boroughmuir School teacher and rugby coach, Gary Macdonald, supported by Boroughmuir Rugby Development Officers, Chris Pacey and Lewis Robinson, this is one of the key community goals BR&CSC set out to achieve when restructuring the club in 2012.

Chris Pacey commented

“Boroughmuir Rugby has been working closely with the local schools to introduce a fun and safe environment for girls to play, and for some, to try rugby for the first time.”

Bill Watson, Chairperson at BR&CSC was equally thrilled with the accomplishment

“Our community programmes are starting to show some great results, with playing figures generally down across Edinburgh, this shows the great work our Rugby Development Team at Boroughmuir is able to achieve in the community.”

The game itself was exciting to watch and there was some great running rugby by both teams. Praise has to go to the girls’ team from Biggar RFC who exhibited great running lines, passing and clinical finishing. The Boroughmuir Rugby Girls also showed some great resilience and some huge hits in defence.

Biggar RFC showing more experience and skills as they went on to win 75 points to 5.

Player of the match was shared by Muir's Captain Kate Davis for some great defence including an absolutely massive hit on Biggar’s strong running, try scoring winger and Amy Lickley for some confident running with ball in hand.

An honourable mention goes to Marie Ann McCormack for consistently going in for tackles against girls much bigger than her.

Boroughmuir Rugby would like to thank Biggar RFC girls team for coming through and providing us with some very tough opposition and we wish them all the best for the season ahead.

If you would like more information or have questions on playing rugby or our Girls Rugby programme at Boroughmuir Rugby, please feel free to contact Chris Pacey e-mail boroughmuirdevelopmentofficer@gmail.com or come down to training Tuesday at 4pm at Meggetland.
