Boroughmuir Bears 28 – Lasswade 2nd XV 21

The Boroughmuir Bears faced Lasswade 2nd XV in their first home match of the RBS Reserve League East 1 campaign. The Bears showed improvement last week in their away defeat to Haddington but were anxious to register a first victory of the season against their Midlothian opponents.

The Bears have been slowly building up a bigger squad over the past few weeks. The front-row problems have largely been alleviated, with the Bears able to have replacement props on the bench in the shape of veteran Scott Anderson, a regular try scorer last season, and also new face Richard Robson. In the backs, Cammy Leask made his return to ‘Muir colours at scrum-half and 18 year-old Fijian-born Frank Yawayawe started on the left wing.

The conditions for the match could not have been better, with the sun shining and little wind troubling the notoriously gusty back pitches of Meggetland. However, the Bears put in a terrible first half performance, which belied the conditions and frustrated players, coaches and the vocal spectators alike. The countless knock-ons, stray passes and a high penalty count meant the Bears could not build any continuity and the only surprise was that they only conceded three points in the first half.

The Bears went into the break 3-0 down, courtesy of a penalty from the Lasswade number 8.

Some tough words were spoken by coaches Kev Robertson and Ed Zuiderent at half-time but it took the Bears awhile to finally get going in the second half. Lasswade added another penalty kick to stretch their lead but it was a try from their stand-out number 8 that proved the real wake up call for the Bears.

Behind 13-0, the Bears finally got back into the game in the final twenty-five minutes. The breakthrough came from a fine individual try from Frank Yawayawe, who used his strength to shrug off a number of tackles to speed down the left-wing and pull a score back for the Bears. The try was converted by Chris Evans.

Buoyed on by this fine bit of play, the Bears began to put Lasswade under more pressure and found themselves camped in the opposition twenty-two. The forwards took the ball on for a few phases before Cammy Leask linked with the backs. The Lasswade backs were up quick but Evans was able to put a grubber behind them, re-gather the ball and flick a pass to Chris Whitelock who dotted down under the posts.

The Bears were finally in front and soon stretched their lead through Yawayawe again. A great run from full-back Calum Brockie put him one-on-one with his opposite number but he unselfishly offloaded to the Fijian Flyer who ran in the try. Evans converted again.

The final try for the Bears came from the other wing, Adam Bucko. Lasswade were now chasing the game and desperate to get another try. Some loose handling from their outside backs, saw the ball go to ground. Bucko was able to gather the ball and canter in untroubled from fifty metres out. This was reward for a player who is new to the game but has been putting in hard work at training over the past couple of weeks.

In the final minutes, Lasswade scored a conciliation try with the match ending 28-21 to the Bears.

Although, the first half was very poor, the squad should be commended for how they bounced back in the second half and some of the rugby they played was excellent. The stand-out performers were Roy Stewart in the forwards who, although not the biggest, puts in a lot of tackles and also offloaded well for Frank’s first try. In the backs, the obvious choice was Frank whose two tries got the Bears back into the game. He is also fairly new to the game but has the attributes to be a key player for ‘Muir in the future.

This Saturday, the Bears face Peebles and they will be looking to avenge two heavy defeats to the Borders side last season.
