Peebles 21- Boroughmuir Rugby 39

Boroughmuir secured a good win in sunny Peebles this Saturday. The Borders side, who defeated Stewart’s Melville last week, was unable to bring its efforts into fruition against the very motivated Boroughmuir team. Boroughmuir set the tone from the start of the game, with strong go-forward play right away.

Muir gained a penalty 2 minutes into the game, and David Reekie scored the first 3 points of the game (3-0). Boroughmuir conceded a scrum just after the restart, resulting in a good line break by the Peebles full-back Greg Raeburn. Benefiting from a turnover, Boroughmuir took the ball in with excellent breaks by Alex Cox and Andy Rose. However, Muir was penalized at a ruck, allowing Raeburn to equalize (3-3).

Muir replied almost immediately with a try by Will Kay, after an outstanding drive by the forwards after a lineout. David Reekie added the extra points (10-3). Peebles then held on to possession and executed fine passages of play as illustrated by a good breakdown by no 8 Warren Kearney.

The Borderers gained a penalty, successfully kicked by Raeburn (10-6). Boroughmuir regained possession and displayed excellent teamwork resulting in a line-break by Jordan Edmunds. He made considerable ground and offloaded to Cox who touched down in the left corner. Reekie missed the conversion (15-6).

Peebles then had possession of the ball, but were unable to go through the very tight Muir defence. Just after Angus Wallace got sent off, Peebles managed to get a penalty, and Raeburn added three points to the score board (15-9).

Muir replied straight away with an unconverted try by Jordan Edmunds just before half-time (HT 20-9). Five minutes after the restart, effective footwork from the Peebles backs led to an unconverted try by Scott (20-14).

This was followed by a try by Will Kay after the Muir scrum managed a very good drive. Reekie added the extras (27-14). Boroughmuir scored again a few minutes later thanks to the speed of the backs. Cox touched down on the right corner and Reekie successfully converted it (34-14).

Shortly after, Thomas Docherty got a yellow card, allowing Peebles to retain possession but again the hosts encountered a very solid Muir defence. Then it was Peebles’ second row Jon Swiatek’s turn to be sent off, and Boroughmuir didn’t miss the opportunity to add another unconverted try, scored by Craig Marshall (39-14).

There were 10 minutes left, and Muir defended hard but unfortunately conceded a try just before the final whistle scored by Anderson after a fine line-break by Neil Hogarth. Raeburn added the extra points (39-21).

Boroughmuir picked up valuable points in Peebles, reaching the top place in the league table together with Watsonians.

“It was good game with some great plays. We built on last week, and next week against Kelso should be another step in the ladder” commented winger Jordan Edmunds after the game.

Peebles coach and former Boroughmuir man Peter Wright said: “Boroughmuir was very physical, particularly around the breakdown. Boroughmuir took all the chances they had, it is a good team”.
