Penicuik RFC U15 Sevens

The u15s last fixture of the season was at the Penicuik 7s on Sunday 19th May. Penicuik had intended creating a Barbarians teams from all the “extra” players in each squad, but in the end Boroughmuir supplied all the players to the Barbarians (Portobello also supplying 2 teams) and so we ended up with 2 teams in the competition, as we had 16 players available in total. As luck would have it, both teams were in the same group of 4 and the first game was between the 2 teams, who were well matched, but the Barbarians were beaten by a more clinical Boroughmuir team 5 tries to 2.

Next up was the Barbarians against Dalkeith, the Barbarians beating a committed Dalkeith team 8 -3, with everyone performing well. This was rapidly followed by Boroughmuir beating Portobello Blues 5 tries to 2. It was the end of the season and, everyone was upping their game and putting in some of the best performances of the season, tries coming from many players. Boroughmuir then took on Dalkeith, winning 7 tries to 2 against a very determined Dalkeith and a much tougher game than the scoreline suggests. Last game of the group was the Barbarians versus Portobello Blues, with the Blues putting in a very strong performance to win 6 tries to 3.

We then had lunch and a much needed breather, while we prepared for the finals with both teams progressing. First up was the 3rd v 4th place playoff, with the Barbarians meeting the hosts, Penicuik. Strength and experience showed against our younger opposition (most of whom could have played in the u14s competition) with a win and 3rd place for the Barbarians 6 tries to nil.

Finally, the 1st v 2nd playoff against Portobello Yellows and a real nail biter this proved to be. There was little to choose between the teams and it was a tough contest. Although Portobello Yellows won 3 tries to 2, we came so close to equalising at the end, but various injuries and especially tiredness proved too much for the boys and it was probably one game too many for most.

Overall, we came 2nd and 3rd in the tournament, with great displays from everyone and a great way to end the season, with 7’s medals to add to our 10s medals. Thanks to Penicuik for arranging a great tournament to end the season with!
