Relegated Boroughmuir were defeated 24-10 by Edinburgh Accies this Saturday at cold and windy Meggetland. Accies duly secured their place in the RBS Premiership next season, while Boroughmuir were unable to end their league campaign on a positive note despite building some promising opportunities.

Accies monopolised early possession and territory, playing mostly in Muir’s half, but were unable to break through the tight home defence. Muir forwards did a good job ripping the ball from a rolling maul which resulted in an excellent break by Jordan Edmunds up the left wing. He offloaded to Robert Cairns who scored the first try of the afternoon between the posts, converted by Ally Warnock (7-0).

Accies replied with fine passages of play especially from their forwards but Boroughmuir soon regained possession and after the whole team completing clever cross-field passing movements, second row Ally Davidson went close to scoring but was held up on the line. Following this, Accies regained control with Alex Black kicking to halfway, giving the opportunity to his team to recommence play in Muir’s half.

The hosts had to work hard in defence. Accies’ fly-half Ruairidh Bonner popped a penalty into touch, resulting in a good drive by his pack and no 8 Callum Reid touching down, converted by Bonner (7-7). Boroughmuir got back into contention for the rest of the first half but good go- forward play just didn’t pay off (HT 7-7).

Accies looked determined to dictate the pace of the match after the break and starved Boroughmuir of good possession. Robin Snape scored an unconverted try less than 10 minutes after the break following a good rolling maul on the blind side (7-12). The visitors continued to dominate and Alex Allan added another unconverted try following a fine line break by Bonner (7-17).

Boroughmuir replied with a penalty by Warnock (10-17), but after Jackson Achilles was yellow carded by referee Lloyd Linton, Accies retained possession and kept going forward, notably through aggressive bursts by Callum Reid. Towards the end of the contest, Muir created one last opportunity to score but a lack of concentration and risky passes led to a turnover, with Ruairidh Young scoring a try just before the final whistle. Just to rub it in, Bonner added the extra points for a 24-10 victory.

What looked like a close game in the first half with competitive displays from both sides, turned into domination by Accies in the second period. Despite having opportunities to show what they are capable of, Boroughmuir again lacked concentration towards the end, allowing their visitors to depart with a bonus point.
