Boroughmuir 1st XV 46 - Murraryfield Wanderers 1st XV 7
A number of the 1st squad were down early to Meggetland ahead of the game against Murrayfield today, be it to take some extra time to warm up, more likely due to the injection of confidence and belief the guys have been finding over the last month.
Early break by Murrayfield's Alex Cox slipping past David Reekie just about opens the scoring if not for the pass to Godsmark floating just past his hands.
Moody and Jackson taking turns on either side of the park to run it into the Murrayfield 22 and from a resulting line out, Kian Coertze sits nicely behind his forward pack for the opening Try.
Murrayfield not the strongest against Muir in the scrum but do very with the the pick and go retaining the ball each time. Beattie the 10 for Murrayfield using his centres to good effect really tests the Muir defence.
Warnock has been controlling the counter attack with good decision making which encourages his young wingers to position themselves around him to support.
After a fantastic catch by Darren Miller at ‘Silly Mid Off’ from a low and fast Murrayfield kick, the ball is spread for the counter attack. After reaching the end of the field, a nice pop pass in side sees Cuister rewarded for his good play throughout the first half.
Murrayfield catching Muir off guard on a couple of occasions with their quick taps and goes, showing they will take any opportunity to make good ground back into Muir’s territory.
Murrayfield running like it is summer 7s, with slick hands out playing Muir’s picket fence defence. Godsmark and Rhodes touching the ball at least 3 times in interchange play with the final fingertip pass back in too low for Godsmark to pick up, he coolie taps it forward with his boot to scope and score.
Reekie adding a couple of penalties throughout the first half draws a close 20-7 to Muir.
The influence by the technical advisor Ben Fisher has really shown the change in the team as they are talking more and anticipating where play will be during the phases.
Yellow card for Murraryfield’s Cam King give Muir a line out inside the 22 and from some good driving play, Greg Scott muscles over for his first of 2 trys for Muir. Greg having a good season with his direct and powerful runs leading to a number of trys.
Alex Cox, 13 for Murrayfield had a good performance with his gliding runs and forcing Muir to commit at least 2 players to bring him down, maybe Muir giving him a bit too much room to run as every step he seems to make good yards.
It is a welcome return to see Alex Henderson return to the Meggetland turf as he gets right into the action with some covering defence. Murrayfield not without the physical fitness but a lapse in mental concentration allows a line out inside their 22 for Captain Andy Rose to drive to the corner for another try.
Jackson Achilles finishes off his team’s industrious performance today with another low drive, supported by Johnny Latta to give Muir their final Try.
Over all a good performance that Muir will be happy to take forward. A good showing of home support definitely helped today.
