Robbie McKenzie and his boys

Boroughmuir Rugby and Community Sports Club is pleased to announce the return of another ex player, Robbie McKenzie, as our acting Director of Rugby.

Robbie will manage the playing budget, report into the board on rugby matters and work with Dave Cockburn and Graham Shiel to deliver a playing approach and capability across the whole club that is visionary and second to none.

Robbie has a wealth of rugby experience and is no stranger to Meggetland. He comes from good pedigree too – his father (Eck) represented Boroughmuir 1st XV 1965-1974, playing centre in the championship winning team from 1972/73.

Robbie played mini and youth rugby at Currie and in 1993, he transitioned to Boroughmuir for senior rugby, playing for the 1st XV to 3rd XV and in a host of successful VII’s teams. Robbie played a key role in Boroughmuir squads in 2002-2003 season when Boroughmuir became the first club in Scotland to win the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV senior leagues in the same season. He last played for Boroughmuir in 2009.

From 2006 onwards, Robbie has been heavily involved in international touch rugby, winning 2 European Championship Gold Medals as a player and a further 4 gold medals as a coach.  He recently coached Scotland squad to 2nd in the World Rankings and a bronze medal at the 2019 Touch World Cup in Malaysia.  Robbie was voted Europe’s Best Touch Coach 2018-2019.

Robbie has been a qualified lawyer since 2001 practising in financial services and his role has developed over the past 10 years to cover legal, risk, compliance and governance functions.  Robbie has recently returned from 6 years working in London and has moved to Haddington. He has been married since 2007 to Lauren, with three young kids – Benny (3), and twins Ollie (1) and Jamie (1).

On his appointment Robbie said, “I’m delighted to return to a rugby club I love dearly – especially at such an interesting time in the Scottish club game.  To see how the club has evolved over the last 10 years has been very interesting and it is an honour and privilege to be able to contribute towards the next chapter in the club’s development. To be able to give something back to a club which has played such an important part in my family’s life means a lot to me. I’m excited to be teaming up with a great group of people, many of whom I know from my playing time at the club.  If you see me down and around the club, come say hello and share your thoughts with me.  If I appear distracted, it’s not personal, I’m probably chasing down one of my three crazy little boys who I hope will enjoy their time at this great family club too!”

It’s great to have Robbie back at Meggetland. Please give him and his family a warm welcome – and watch out for those crazy little boys – who obviously take after their dad
