Magic 2's v Haddington - Saturday 19th August

Squad from;-

Robinson, S Clark Cpt, Gracie, Wild-goose, Clark A, Mcdevitt, Coulter, Wilson, Hutchinson, Gongora, Roach, O'Neill, Hamilton Vice Cpt, Henderson, Wilson, Barker, Alexander, Darling, Muller, Cannon,

It was a windy day in Haddington for the game, with slight drizzle beforehand. During the game the wind blew one way but the rain cleared.

This paved the way for B’muir to run in 5 first half tries with the wind. The first from Duncan Darling at 13 with Mike Wilson converting. Great interception and breakaway pace leaving the defence trailing after staunch midfield tackling form the team.

Next up, young Tom Barker scored down the left wing after a poor kick from Haddington only reached Jack Hamilton just outside their 22 where he drew two players in and created space for Barker to speed in for a score. Welcome to senior rugby Thomas!

Next it was Tom’s turn to create a 2v1 after some great ball retention from Mike Wilson in our own half. The ball was laid back at the ruck for quick ball out to Tom run into space, create the overlap and in Jack went for a score against his home team. Mike converted this time.

Greg Alexander got on the score sheet from 10m out. Good ball retention from the forwards and some silly penalties by Haddington eventually saw the ball tapped quickly, out to the backs and after a slight juggle the cap wearing, loud Greg crashed through a gap for the dot-down. Later in the game he knocked on over the line but let’s not mention that!

Try number 5 was a great support play move seeing the non-training Andy Clark go almost the full length in support to receive the last pass from brother Stuart after a great breakout form the pacey Dan Coulter. Great running up the middle of the field and excellent work from the formidable pack to get there.... but where were the backs?

Haddington did manage a try late in the half with some sloppy Defence seeing the winger skip in with little hands on him. 31-7 half time

The 2nd half Haddington used the wind although a couple of wayward kicks meant we were lucky. the coaches had asked our players to play ball in hand both halves to get to know the moves and their teammates so happy to let them kick and allow us to run back. They managed 2 tries but good defence and good talking kept Bmuir in the game the whole time.

Eventually a gap and Jack Hamilton sped up the wing to dot down for number 2 and a slight hamstring pull. Personally, I think he was tired!

31-21 final score and great first run out.

6 new players, 4 others back playing after time off and various new partnerships meant the coaching team were happy. Great start to the pre-season with Knight, Young, Scott, Sievewright, Hare all happy to see guys get game time.
