Making their, now annual, trip up to Edinburgh to play against the S1 and S2 squads, 'Muir hosted Colet Court. For the S1s it was the first chance to test themselves in the step up to 13-man rugby and a full sized pitch.
The boys started well, gathering the ball from the kick off. Recycling the ball, the boys used the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition defence and after 2-3 phases of concerted effort they started to punch holes in the defence, leading to a well worked try from the backs in the 3rd minute. With the conversion being pulled wide by the wind, they were back into the flow again.
Strong work again from the forwards, forced a series of turnovers. These in turn led to a try with some great offloading within the forwards. The effort was sustained leading to two further tries both scored out wide following some great passing play, which say the boys going in 4 tries to the good at half-time with 2 conversions.
Things got loose in the second half as the coaches tried some new combinations of players and positions, but the boys maintained their strong defence. Turnovers led to two breakaway tries, one a kick chase, and the other an out-and-out speed score. One conversion and that ended the the scoring for the game. Six tries, and a clean sheet defence, was a good start to the season.
We’d like to thank Colet Court for the games and wish them well with their season ahead. It was a good shake-out for the ‘Muir squads in advance of the first game in the President’s Conference against Highland the following Sunday.
